Rangiroa Kia Ora

Rangiroa ("Rangi"), the most popular destination in the Tuamotu Islands, is one of the world's greatest dive destinations. Its fabled Blue Lagoon, nearly a sea within a sea at 78 kilometers long and 24 kilometers wide, attracts experienced divers and well as first-timers and snorkelers.

Rangiroa is surrounded by two legendary bodies of water, Moana-tea (Peaceful Ocean) and Moana-uri (Wild Ocean) and the main villages of Avatoru and Tiputa.

Kia Ora Sauvage

Kia Ora Sauvage

Located far across the lagoon from the main village on a remote and tiny motu is one of the world's most unique properties, the Kia Ora Sauvage, where guests are welcomed as family while they enjoy one of only five bungalows in a primitive, yet luxurious environment. This little piece of heaven sits on an all but deserted white sand motu - one hour by boat across the lagoon from the Kia Ora Village. Small and simple are the cardinal rules.  Please note that the hotel is currently undergoing renovations which are expected to be completed in January of 2011.

Five enchanting bungalows provide accommodations for a total of 10 guests. Each thatched-roof bungalow has been hand-crafted from native wood, bamboo and palm. The bungalows have private facilities featuring gardens and showers. Avearahi is not wired for electricity or phones so your complete escape from civilization is guaranteed. Each evening, soft glowing oil lamps are brought to your bungalow.

At night you can relax on your private terrace under a sky filled with stars and watch the torches being lit on the beach. A sandy beach, hammock, lounge chairs and a large deck give you plenty of perches to view the beautiful lagoon.

A charming staff provides the resort's services: simple, healthful meals emphasizing fresh seafood; a cocktail and snack bar, and island activities fitting the season, such as fishing, shelling and reef exploration. A canoe, snorkeling and fishing equipment are all available for your use. The resort prefers that guests allow a minimum of two nights at the Kia Ora Sauvage. Due to flight schedules into and out of Rangiroa, it is frequently necessary and recommended that you allow at least one night at Hotel Kia Ora before and after your visit.

Words can’t describe the warmth, peace, and refreshing experience of spending a few days in this magnificent location.

Avatoru Village

Located on the western end of a string of connected islands, the village of Avatoru is where you'll find most of the island's businesses, banks and shops. Rangiroa's airport is also located here.

Tiputa Village

Tiputa is a 45-minute boatride from Avatoru. Though both communities boast a similar number of government agencies, Tiputa is the main administrative community, with an infirmary, post office and town hall.

There are a number of small islets within Rangiroa's blue lagoon that are important sanctuaries for bird life. The most popular of these islands is Paio, which is easily accessible by boat.

Rangiroa boasts such an abundance of white sand, the atoll can aptly be described as one big beach. That said, Rangiroa does have its share of officially designated beach areas. Popular spots include Blue Lagoon Motu, Tiputa Point and L'ile Aux Recifs.

Rangiroa is renowned for its excellent dive sites. A large variety of sea life can be found in its waters, including black-tip, gray and white-tip reef sharks and giant manta rays. Dive operators offer instruction and lead dives into the lagoon, passes and the open sea.

Parasailing is offered through Rangiroa Parasail. No training is required, and a parasail flight with boat excursion to Blue Lagoon or to reef island can be arranged. The views are truly spectacular.

Boat Tours

Local operators are available for independent or group excursions. If you wish to sail in the Blue Lagoon or to the bird sanctuary to Motu Paio, or want to check out the dolphins frolicking at Tiputa Pass or Site Ohutu in late afternoon, consult the hotel's activity desk.

Rangiroa's lagoon carries an astounding assortment of marine life, which makes it a prime spot for snorkeling. You don't have to go anywhere in particular to snorkel - just grab your mask and fins, walk out the front door of your hotel or pension, and jump in!

Fakarava has been referred to as the island of dreams and is home to rare birds, plants, and crustaceans while the dive sites are virtually undiscovered.  The environment here is so pure that Fakarava has been designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for the preservation of rare species.

A pearl farm, the sea slug ("rori") smoke house-highly prized by Asian gourmets, the ancient village of Tetamanu with one of the first Catholic churches built in coral and dating from 1874.

Grab some fins and a snorkel mask and you'll experience a wide variety of colorful tropical fish, huge napoleon wrasses, harmless grey sharks, and sometimes even a manta ray.

Scuba Diving

Scuba diving in the tropical waters off Fakarava couldn't be easier: when the tide is even, simply dive into the warm water, sit yourself at the bottom of the reef pass, and watch the crowd of aquatic life cruise by, just like in a Paris café!

The unspoiled waters off Fakarava atoll make for great fishing, which is available from the pontoon, or from a chartered boat for tuna, marlin, mahi-mahi or wahoo.
